My Other Phone is an iPhone ..

Every so often I come across a bumper sticker that reads “My other car is a farrari” or “Porsche” or “Corvette” or “lamborghini”. I used to wonder why anyone would bother telling the world what their other car was and that too when it was so obvious that they owned it only in their fantasy. This was until I saw the iPhone from Apple.
I would classify myself as an “Early adopter” when it comes to technology and gadgets. However, I have not kept pace with the innovations in the cell phone industry. In a world full of a billion handsets, I have churned through just three in the past 6 years. Even the ones that I have owned, don’t really make me feel proud. Now that Steve Jobs has introduced the sexy and sleek iPhone at MacWorld 2007, I am looking forward to the opportunity to catch up.
From early previews, it looks like the iPhone will be a runaway success. AT&T has already said that more than a million customers have contacted them and have said that they plan to buy the phone once it is available. It’ll be interesting to see if these customers actually stick to their words when they hear the sticker price.
I plan to post a detailed review if when I get my very own iPhone. But with a price tag of $500+, for now, I guess, I’ll just put a bumper sticker on my car saying “My Other Phone is an iPhone”.
PS: With all the buzz surrounding the iPhone launch in june, I am putting AAPL stock on my watch list. Its at $108 and I can easily see it going to $150 by Dec.

Hi Atul. Nice to see you blogging.
About the iPhone….well, I really hope it lives up to the hype. The thing with Apple products are that they can skimp on features and compensate with great design and demand a high price and still find millions interested to buy their stuff. The iPhone offers much lesser features than say a BlackBerry at a much higher price, but I’m sure it can create a cult like following of believers who will flock to the stores to get their hands on this. Personally, I’m not a fan of anything with touch screens. As far a s AAPL stock is concerned, I would say it might spike after the launch, but will come down later since the bulk of business users which are a major chunk of the pie for $300+ phone buyers, are overwhelmingly not interested in the iPhone according to a survey by Cnet.

Hey Mudit,
!!
So you are alive
I agree with your comments about the fact that Apple products are not feature packed like many others and still cost a fortune .. but one has to give it to them for making really usable products that one would feel proud to own.
The “Crackberry” addicts (business users), who can afford it might not buy the iPhone for themselves .. but my guess is that it might end up becoming this years favorite christmas gift for their teenage kids.
Smart phones will become the next logical upgrade for most people in an increasingly “connected” society and once this segment hits the 14-25 age group (ofcourse i’m talking about rich kids) Apple’s “trendy” iPhone would stand a muuuch better chance than RIMM’s “corporate-looking” Blackberry.
With 250 million smartphones sold each year world wide, Apple needs to get hold of just 10% market share to add a Billion dollars to its bottom line.
